How “Pachinko,” Apple TV+’s trilingual TV show, uses subtitling as an immersion tool
The TV show is spoken in 3 languages: Korean, Japanese, and English.
The solution the platform found for overlapping and identifying the languages in the subtitles was highlighting them with different colors.
Unless you have customized subtitles, the subtitles are shown like this:
Korean: yellow • Japanese: blue • English: branco
At some points, the colors even mix!
Although it’s unusual, highlighting multi-language subtitles with different colors was the way they found for the viewer to be immersed in the complex process of immigration and to understand language as a critical aspect of human identity.
